As massage therapists, we often view the body through a lens of muscular health. The general philosophy being that if we have healthy muscles, the bones will all line up correctly, so our joints will be healthy and the body will be pain free. To understand muscle health we look at posture, movement, sensations (like pain, tingling or numbness), and the feeling of the muscle tissue. Using this perspective and our experience we will devise a treatment plan that will help you achieve your goals
for the massage.
DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE
Our most popular massage modality, deep tissue massage targets muscular holding in the body and seeks to release it through a combination of targeted pressure, compressions, stretches and other techniques. D.eep tissue massage can feel intense and effective. Clients can expect a strong massage that will make you aware of the places in your body that hold the most tension/sensitivity and a corresponding relief of that tension after the session.
A fully body treatment, applying slower and broader pressure to achieve release of muscular tension, relieve stress, and calm the mind. Relaxation massage can offer many benefits to the whole body as it stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system which is responsible for organ regulation, digestion and rest. Clients can expect a solid and calming pressure through out the massage that will leave them feeling mellow and de-stressed.
Massage can be a benefit to any athlete at any level of training. Often times we develop muscular patterns based on the sport we play, leading to quicker wear or injury to our joints. Sports massage can target these muscles to help improve recovery from training and competing. We also teach our clients a few yoga poses or flows to do at home to aid in postural correction and muscular recovery. Sports massages vary in style and intensity based on proximity to an event. Sports massages are generally similar to Deep Tissue sessions but will include more deep stretching and trigger point release work.
The body undergoes many natural anatomical changes during pregnancy, and massage can help make this process more comfortable. Pregnancy massage improves circulation, relieves back pain and reduces swelling in the body. Pregnancy massage uses a combination of deep and relaxing techniques to ease muscular tension then relax the body and mind to place of rest and release. Our massage tables are adjustable to make your session as relaxing as possible and include a removable middle so you can enjoy your session laying face down.
MYOFASCIAL YOGA THERAPY
Beginning with postural analysis to identify alignment and muscular patterns, myofascial yoga therapy uses deep massage in combination with active client movement in order to restructure postural patterning and remove scar tissue from past injuries, repetitive strain or other muscular issues. This type of work can feel very intense, and is strong massage; similar to Rolfing or Structural Integration styles of bodywork. This type of work is normally done as a series, targeting different muscle groups in each session.
HOT STONE MASSAGE
A deeply relaxing massage experience. Hot stone massage begins with heated stones being placed on your back melting tension away with their warmth. The heated stones are then used to massage the whole body in combination with relaxing swedish massage strokes that leave you feeling like a polished stone. ($25 surcharge added for Hot Stone Massage)
Reiki is an energy healing technique that focuses on manipulating the human energy field known as Ch'i (also spelled Qi or known as the auric field or aura). Ch'i is a measurable electromagnetic energy created by all living things, which has been studied throughout history, most noticeably in Oriental Medicine. Prior to a Reiki session, you will discuss your goals for physical, emotional or spiritual healing with your therapist, you will then lie down in a comfortable position, while the therapist uses a series of either light touch or hands off movements to manipulate the flow of Ch'i through your body to help you in the healing process. Clients will often feel changes in temperature or tingling as the therapist moves over different parts of their body with a meditative trance, or dreamlike mental state during the session. Following a session clients often feel greater mental clarity and often insight gain insight into their session goals.

Unlike modern Western medicine, which focuses on the health of particular organs, acupuncture is based on Eastern medical traditions that treat the body as a complete system, wherein the interaction between the organs is as important as each individual organ. When the organs are functioning properly they produce energy that both nourishes the body and circulates throughout it. This energy travels in pathways along the limbs, trunk, and back. These pathways can become blocked due to trauma, physical or emotional, as well as organ dysfunction. Just as the healthy function of the organs fill the pathways, free flow in these pathways heals the organs. Acupuncture takes advantage of this bidirectional relationship, and uses needles to activate key points in the body, change the flow in the pathways, and achieve the desired health outcome.
Acupuncture is best known for treating pain. However, it can be used just as effectively for digestive problems, sleep issues, fertility, fatigue, stress, and even preventing and curing illness. Allergies, numbness, and tremors are also commonly treated.
For those looking to begin a yoga practice or expand an existing one with more specific and informed guidance, our staff of Massage/Yoga Therapists offer private yoga lessons and yoga classes. Classes are designed to help you reach your health and wellness goals regardless of your fitness or flexibility. Classes range from 1-4 students and each student will be able to receive specific instruction for their body and fitness level.
When my Wife and I established Green Street Massage, we did so with the goal of creating a place in Jamaica Plain where we could bring passion for yoga and fitness along with our skills as massage therapists to the community, so others could enjoy the heath benefits these practices have brought into our lives.
Both Lily and I, grew up living active lifestyles, that included years of formal martial arts training, competitive sports, and performance dance. We have formally studied a number of bodywork modalities, yoga disciplines, strength and conditioning, Reiki, and hold Doctorates in Divinity. Informally, through self guided study and apprenticeships, we continue to study herbal medicine, pathology, nutrition, spirituality, meditation, and alternative healing to try and gain a holistic perspective on the body, movement, and healing.
Rather then use one type of massage or another when treating our clients, we apply a more holistic approach where we look at your health history, normal activities, and posture to get a better understanding of your body and how you move. We then draw on our backgrounds of training to devise a course of bodywork that will be most effective at improving muscle health, flexibility, and posture.
We have found that massage, especially in combination with flexibility and strength training, can help improve not only muscular health but overall health and wellness. Benefits include greater body awareness, decreased stress, improved balance and pain relief. It is with these goals that we began in our one room massage studio and now offer in our new expanded space including a room for yoga and fitness training.
Please feel free to give us a call or shoot us an email with any questions you might have, we look forward to hearing from you.
